Swash-Actors A-I

Swash-Actors A-I:

AMECHE, DON
Don Ameche has been acting for years, but he tried his hand at being a Swashbuckler in his early days.

Films that Don has appeared in:

The Three Musketeers (with the Ritz Brothers)

BLOOM, ORLANDO
Orlando is quiet a new Swash-Actor, but one of which deserves mentioning. Appearing in such films as Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy and, my personal favorite of his, Kingdom of Heaven, Orlando has proven to be a Swash-Actor that is to be reckoned with!!

Films that Orlando has appeared in:

The Lord of the Ring Series

Kingdom of Heaven

Pirates of the Caribbean, both versions

Troy

CHANDLER, JEFF
Old-time movie Swashbuckler.

Films that Jeff has appeared in:

Yankee Pasha

COOTE, ROBERT
Robert was a character actor in the early days of Swashbuckling, but his best role, perhaps, was that of Aramis in MGM's 1948 classic: The Three Musketeers.

Films that Robert has appeared in:

The Three Musketeers, 1948

Scaramouche

DAVIS, GEENA
She was good in Cutthroat Island. Geena Davis isn't the first lady to take on Swahbuckling roles - so did Maureen O'Hara in "At Swords Point," and "Against All Flags!"

Films that Geena Davis has appeared in:

Cutthroat Island

Gérard Depardieu

What can be said of Depardieu? He has mastered the world of modern day Swashbuckling!! He has been Christopher Columbus, Porthos and even Cyrano de Bergerac!! It is fun watching the French actor in his own element.

Films that Depardieu has played in:

The Count of Monte Cristo (1999)

Les Miserables (Original French Version) NO SUBTITLES

La Femme Musketeer (2003)

1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992): being Christopher Columbus

Cyrano De Bergerac (Original French Version with English Subtitles)

The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)

DEPP, JOHNNY
Johnny Depp has at least two Swashbuckling claims to fame, and yet there would have been a third, I had read. While Disney was working on "The Three Musketeers" in the early 1990's, that starred Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp was working on a film entitled: "D'Artagnan." Disney beat them to the chase, so the film company dropped the D'Artagnan project. And that is just too bad, because I REALLY wanted to see that film!

Films that Johnny Depp has appeared in:

Pirates of the Caribbean

Don Juan de Marco

FAIRBANKS, Sr. DOUGLAS
The father of all Swashbucklers! Doug was a silent comedy actor until 1920, when he read the story that became his silent classic "The Mark of Zorro." He even put on a fake mustache for the role. We have to remember that back in the early 1900's it was viewed that a gentleman did not have a mustache, that was left to tramps, such as Doug's good friend Charlie Chaplan. When the film of Zorro was a success, Doug tried to return to comedy, but the fans wouldn't have it. He publicly announced that he was only going to star in Swashbuckling films from then on. So, for the 1921 classic of "The Three Musketeers," Doug actually broke tradition, and grew a real mustache to portray his hero D'Artagnan
. Instead of being laughed at, he actually started a new trend - all gentlemen then started wearing mustahes. Doug started the entire genre of the Swashbuckling film; even though there were Swashbuckling films being made prior to him, he is the one that gave it the Swashbuckling flare that we all know and love today.

Films that Doug has appeared in:

Mark of Zorro, 1920: DVD or VHS

The Three Musketeers, 1921: DVD or VHS

Robin Hood, 1922: DVD or VHS

Flynn, Errol: King of all film Swashbucklers!!

Hale, Alan Sr.
The daddy to the skipper on Gilliagan's Island was a great character actor who supported Errol Flynn in many pictures. His films with Flynn include: "The Sea Hawk," "The Adventures of Don Juan," and "The Adventures of Robin Hood." Ironically, about twenty years before he played Little John in Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, Alan Hale Sr. also played Little John along side Douglas Fairbanks in his 1922 classic "Robin Hood." Hale also played Porthos in the film "The Man in the Iron Mask."

Films that Alan Hale has appeared in:

Robin Hood, 1922: DVD or VHS

Adventures of Robin Hood, 1938: DVD or VHS

Sea Hawk: DVD or VHS

Adventures of Don Juan: DVD or VHS

Man in the Iron Mask: DVD or VHS

Hale, Alan Jr.
The skipper of Gilligan's Island himself was at one time a Swashbuckler! Just like his daddy, he weilded a sword himself in a few films. His dad played Porthos in "The Man in the Iron Mask," Jr. played the son of Porthos in "At Sword's Point." And then, many years later, Jr. also played Porthos in a 1970's version of "The Man in the Iron Mask."

Films that Alan Hale has appeared in:

At Swords Point: DVD or VHS

The Fifth Musketeer: DVD or VHS

Hope, Bob
King of the Swashbucklers? . . . not hardly, but perhaps king of the comedy Swashbucklers, yes! Hope is delightful in Swashbucklers, and he always has a wise crack about his good friend Bing Crosby in them. For example, he gave his name (in Princess and the Pirate) as that of Sylvester Crosby: "I can't help it, it's the name they gave me.
Though I'm a little thin for the part." And I won't tell you what happens at the end of the film, either! And can you imagine Hope being Casanova? Well, he took the place of Casanova (who was being played by, get this - Vincent Price!) - he almost had them fooled, too!

Films that Bob Hope has appeared in:

The Princess and the Pirate

Monsieur Beaucaire

Casanova's Big Night
