THE MARK OF ZORRO
by: Johnston McCulley.
Written in 1919, and appearing in Argosy magazine at first, McCulley was lucky enough to have a special reader of his story - the famous Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., whilst he was on vacation on a ship. Doug loved the idea of an early Californian highwayman, and decided to play the part in his next movie. He thought the title needed to be changed, however, and so in 1920 he changed the title from "The Curse of Capistrano," into the more catchy "The Mark of Zorro." This is what boosted Fairbanks career as a Swashbuckler. Also, this lead McCulley into writing more Zorro books. One title of which "The Mask of Zorro," became the title for the more recent Zorro film, starry Antonio Bandaras and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Read the book that started the whole Zorro legend!!!!
