RETURN TO MAIN MENU ~ MUSKETEER CARD GAME!

Welcome to a Swashbuckling Experience!

What makes this game unique from any other card game is how you create COMBINATIONS with the cards in your hand, and onto the ‘Battle Field;’ and also because it can either be used by a single household to play an evening’s pleasure with family and friends [Family Night Rules], or can be used by individuals as a CCG (Collectible Card Game), to where a person can build that ultimate Deck! In other words, you can either collect all available cards [Starter Deck and all Expansion Decks] for your family and friends to play with at one sitting, or you can be an individual who collects the cards to build ultimate Card Decks to play against your family and friends who have also built their own unique Decks of Cards. All this will be explained shortly. Also, for best game-play, descriptions of how each card works will be explained later as well. For game-play to work successfully, Starter Deck MUST be obtained before any Expansion Decks are added!

The Historical Setting!

Paris – between the adventurous years of about 1625 A.D., until just past 1640 A.D., was a place where romanticism ran high, and intrigues were everywhere! And during those years, when Prime Minister Cardinal Richelieu rose in power, because of King Louis XIII’s need for his political skills, Richelieu insisted that he have his own Guards – simply because Louis had his Musketeers! And unlike the rest of Europe’s regular musketeers (that is, any soldier who carried a musket onto the Battle Field was deemed a musketeer), the Musketeers of France (actually called: “The King’s Musketeers!”) were a unique group of highly trained soldiers; and, even though they participated in many battles and wars, were primarily an elite bodyguard for King Louis XIII.

The training ground for these young dandies was the Cadets of the Guards. Only a gentleman of noble blood could participate in this privileged group! Here, the young aristocrat would learn the very basics of war; battle formation and tactics; horsemanship; how to dance; and how to act properly at the King’s Court!

The next step for the seasoned soldier (after haven participated in some war campaigns, and had proven satisfactory) was to advance into the Royal Guards! Most soldiers were completely content if they could ever reach such a standard as to being a Guard for his Majesty!

However, the ultimate privilege for most of these Guards was to advance into the ranks of The King’s Musketeers! But getting into this grand unit wasn’t as easy as it might at first appear. First of all, assuming that there was even an open position, one would have to serve at least two years in the Royal Guards (haven served bravely in several war campaigns), or would have performed an outstanding act of bravery and derring-do! [For full details on the History of the King’s Musketeers, please read the Introduction to my novel “The Adventures of Monsieur de La Donaree the Musketeer,” at: www.tedanthonyroberts.webs.com/donareethemusketeer.htm ].

Keeping an eye constantly out upon the Royal Guards, both Louis and Richelieu (who were competing against each other) constantly tried to recruit the best into their own ranks – Louis for his Musketeers, and Richelieu for his personal Guards. Naturally – for the glory of God, King, and Country (as the cross of the Musketeers become to represent) – a lot of these soldiers preferred to become “French Royalists!” That is, for the king. However, the Cardinal, not wanting to be out-done on his own personal Battle Field (i.e. politics and court intrigue), had proceeded to do a lot of bribing with gold, rank, and position! And, once converted over to his cause, he placed a church cross upon the uniforms of these superb soldiers, and dubbed them: “The Cardinal’s Guards.” Thereupon, after edging their way into the Prime Minister’s good graces, they had become full fledged “French Cardinalists!”

So, as one can certainly see, both the Musketeers and the Cardinal’s Guards were men of extreme swashbuckling talents! And, as certainly can be imagined, what had constituted from this type of recruiting was constant jealousy and bitter skirmishes between the two companies! Scolding them for their rash behavior in public, the two masters would secretly congratulate and reward their favored men in private!

But not only were these things happening in France around this time period, but so was all those political and court intrigues that were taking place whilst the rest of Paris slept! Such adventure – such secrecy! There were Secret Agents flying about; secret rendezvous happening everywhere; and, to top it all off with, it was the heads of the state that were causing a lot of it to happen themselves! The Cardinal was CERTAINLY one of the main ring-leaders of the Secret Agent movement!

Then, there was Queen Anne and her loyal following! Even though the two real powers in France were the King and the Cardinal, the Queen was trying her best to keep her head above the water! Cardinal Richelieu, who was secretly in love with her, dared to speak to her of romance! Thinking him to be completely out of his mind, she asked him to prove this supposed undying love, and had him dress up like a clown and dance in front of her. Having her best friend, Madame de Chevreuse, hidden behind a curtain, both Anne and her friend burst out laughing as the Prime Minister gravely danced around the room! Infuriated beyond measure, Richelieu swore revenge, and had his design on destroying the Queen’s influence at court, and with the King himself! But, to make matters worse, the Queen’s eyes fell upon the famed Duke of Buckingham, Prime Minister of England, for the flattering Duke had dared to romance her himself! This, as a lot of historians agree, was the prime reason that the famous Siege of La Rochelle (France against England) had happened in the first place – Richelieu’s jealousy over Buckingham’s success with the Queen!

In an attempt to rescue the Queen from the Cardinal’s hatred and bad influence with the King, Anne had collected a small gathering of loyal servants and Secret Agents to aid in her mission to save her position and honor! Naturally, since the Cardinal had developed a heated jealously toward Anne, all the Cardinalist (including the Cardinal’s Guards) had also developed hatred toward the august Queen themselves! However, feeling the lady’s position was a delicate one, and also feeling that the Queen was very sacred, the French Royalists always would run to her aid when called upon . . . that is, until Richelieu would get ahold of them! Out of all the French soldiers, however, only the Musketeers were immune to his enticing briberies!

Then over in England, there were other things brewing! Of course, there was the Duke of Buckingham, who was an English Royalist for King Charles I. – a king that was aiming very hard at having absolutism for his throne . . . that is, for himself! . . . and he was going to have it at any cost! Buckingham was a man who was helping to make that a reality! However, since the Duke of Buckingham’s eye had fell upon the Queen of France (a married woman, no less), it proved to be a mistake that would ultimately cost him his life, for an assassin’s dagger was thrust into his heart, by the hand of an enraged puritan fanatic named John Felton, for the immoral and political crimes of the famed Duke! Here we have the eve of the English Civil War, which matched the Puritans against the English Royalists, because the Puritans wished to wash the throne of England clean of tyranny, and to give credit to the intelligence of this nation who wished for more freedom applied to their well being . . . of which freedom they would eventually look toward Oliver Cromwell for, who was to help them make this more realistic, as he was to become their Lord Protector – after the beheading of King Charles I.!

Here we have the Setting of the game! And since this game is based upon this Historical Setting, the cards in the game will naturally flow as close to history as possible! Therefore, there are restrictions on all of them – of what card will work with what card, and of what card won’t work with what card!

‘FAMILY NIGHT’ RULES

Building decks for a successful CCG (collectible card game) has more detailed rules, so those rules will be discussed a little lower down; but don’t skip ‘Family Night Rules’ simply because you strictly want to play a CCG only, because the BASIC CONCEPT of the game will be explained here as well, and may not necessarily be repeated in the CCG section. So, for now, we will discuss playing the game in an easier format, not as detailed, and just for an evening’s pleasure of gaming with family and friends! Even though it is true that having a CCG will require one to collect a greater number of cards to build that perfect deck, playing the game for a single household (as the rules in this section are about) only requires either the Starter Deck only to play, or the Starter Deck with any number of Expansion Decks added – however you want to slice it or dice it! Honestly, though, the real fun actually begins when Expansion Decks are added, as one will be able to see when each card is later discussed in detail.

In ‘Family Night Rules,’ you will be working with just one (1) deck of cards! And this one deck can be added to with Expansion Decks as you see fit . . . just let it grow, and grow, if you so wish to do (I’ll get into better detail of this just below)! There needs to be two or more people playing. But, before game-play even begins, the group must pick one person to be the ‘Dealer,’ and one must become the ‘Score-Keeper.’ Then all cards being used in the game are shuffled by the Dealer, and seven (7) cards are dealt out to each player. If more than four (4) players are participating, it will be necessary to add some Expansion Decks to your game. The cards are dealt to each player face-down, so no-one else can see them. The Dealer starts by giving the person to their left the first card; the person to the first person’s left gets the second card; and so forth; dealing in a clockwise manner, until all seven (7) cards are finally given to all players. During the dealing, each player will place their seven (7) cards into their hands (of course, they can see their own cards; but the other players cannot!). The remaining cards, after all players are given their initial seven (7), are then placed off to the side (but reachable by the Dealer) into a single stack, face down. This unused stack will become the ‘DRAW-PILE,’ from which ONLY the Dealer may draw from. Game-play will then start with the person on the Dealer’s left (the same person who received the very first dealt card). This player will make the first play of the game by setting a card or cards onto the ‘Battle Field’ – i.e. the playing area in front of them. Of course, these played cards will be face-up for all players to see upon the table – and visible to all players they must be! This person has either, like was said, played one or more cards. If more than one card was played by this person, then it’s obvious that they had used a COMBINATION! Combinations will be discussed in its own section just below.

‘BATTLE ROUNDS’ & ‘BATTLE STRENGTH’

An entire cycle of game play – that is, when each player has played one entire Round (or, when each person has participated by placing one or more cards onto the ‘Battle Field’ for one turn) – is called a ‘Battle Round.’ But in order to see who will win each ‘Battle Round,’ (or, rather, each battle), each player has to add Totals together of their own played cards. Most cards will have a ‘Battle Strength’ number at the top right of them which tells the player how strong that card is. The only cards that do not have a Battle Strength number upon them are the Wild Cards [Wild Cards only appear in the Expansion Decks]. Wild Cards, instead, have instructions to follow (that are written upon each one), and can be played when other cards cannot [Wild Cards are explained in their own section below]. Once the player is done placing their card or cards down upon the Battle Field, then that player has to count all Battle Strength numbers together (each player will count all their own played cards), and come to a grand total of their own cards by adding them. The total sum is the Battle Strength that the other players must either match or outdo! If the top totals are matched, a ‘DUEL’ is then called between all matched players [Dueling rules are handled in their own section below]. And yes, you are trying to be the HIGHEST totaled sum Battle Strength in order to win that one Battle Round!

Players can help themselves keep up with their own Battle Strength totals during play by either using pencil and paper, or by using tokens; or the Score-Keeper can do so by tallying up each person’s Battle Strength total on their paper.

When a player places their card or cards upon the playing area (or, Battle Field), they then must tell the other players that their turn is over before the next player may begin. Keep in mind, though, that once you have declared your turn over, you CANNOT play another card – unless it’s a Wild Card, which can be played by any player at anytime during the Battle Round, regardless if it is their turn or not! Also, during a person’s turn, they may place whatever they need onto the Battle Field, and take away whatever they wish. They can do whatever they like until they declare their turn over; then their actions must stop. And after the entire Battle Round is complete (i.e. after all players have battled for that one (1) Round), then the person with the highest Battle Strength total wins the Battle Round, and gains one (1) point!

THE ‘SCORE-KEEPER’ & COLLECTING ‘WAR JOURNALS’

There are two (2) different ways of keeping score with this game; but both methods require one player to be a designated ‘Score-Keeper,’ and that person will have need of pencil and paper in order to do so. But the two methods either require everyone to simply ‘Discard’ their ‘used’ cards into one single pile, while the ‘Score-Keeper’ keeps up with everyone’s score upon his paper, or everyone can temporarily collect ‘War Journals!’ War Journals are a collection of ALL cards played within one Battle Round of gaming . . . or, collected from one battle! The reason they are called ‘War Journals’ is simply because each card which was used in that turn of battle by all the players truly tells a story of the battle which was so bravely fought. Each time a player wins a battle, they will collect all the used cards together into one single, small stack, and set them face down in their own area – earning them one (1) point for the game. Of course, the more Journals you collect (that is, the more battles you win), will not only give you an impressive war record, which can be read within each of your War Journals, but will prove once and for all that you are the best warrior, and the winner of the entire war! In other words, having the most Journals or points will cause you to win the game. But I will explain this in fuller detail very soon.

After the ‘Draw-Pile’ has been exhausted, then all players will count the number of their ‘War Journals’ and inform the ‘Score-Keeper’ of their total count – which the ‘Score-Keeper’ will record with his pencil and paper. Of course, if it’s a very short game that’s being played, a ‘Score-Keeper’ will be obsolete, for after the ‘Draw-Pile’ has been completely used up, then the player with the most ‘War Journals’ will be declared the winner of the war! If, however, an agreed upon total score has been already established, and was not reached before the ‘Draw-Pile’ depleted, then a score will certainly need to be kept, for all ‘War Journals’ will need to be collected together, and shuffled, so a new Draw-Pile can be made for the Dealer!

WHEN THE DEALER DEALS THE NEXT ROUND OF CARDS

After ONLY one (1) player has completely run out of cards in their hand, that’s when the Dealer takes the stack of the Draw-Pile to deal the next round of cards to EVERY player. Now, since this is a game which deals with COMBINATIONS [which results in some players using more than one card to play at a time] then it goes without saying that some players will end up having more cards in their hand than others. However, by an opponent having more cards in their hands than you, certainly does not mean in the least that they are in a better position; but what ultimately counts is the number of War Journals or Points that have been collected by you! Regardless of the number of cards in your hand, when a player runs out of cards to play, then the Dealer gives ALL players seven (7) cards once again! Play then begins with the winner of the last Battle Round (the winner ALWAYS begins the new Round), and play continues as it did before the cards ran out of the Draw-Pile. If you only have two (2) cards left in the Draw-Pile, then these two will become the TOP two cards in the new Draw-Pile!

BUILDING COMBINATIONS ONTO THE ‘BATTLE FIELD’

Before getting started with explaining what each individual card can do on your Battle Field, which is extremely important for game-play, it’s best to first explain how to build COMBINATIONS onto the playing-field, so you’ll be able to win that individual battle to collect that one ‘War Journal’ (1 point). Winning a single battle, however, is a far cry from winning the whole war! Winning the whole war (the end of the game – which I briefly explained in the last section) will be when one of two decisions are made; such as: (1) setting a certain point level to reach [and first to reach that point level will win], or (2) running out of cards to deal out to all players from the Draw-Pile – and the player with the most War Journals (i.e. points) will win the game. In the deck you will notice that there are different ‘CATEGORIES’ of cards. For instance:

~ PERSONALITY CARDS (both named and un-named)

~ BATTLE WEAPONRY CARDS

~ BATTLE ACCESSORY CARDS (such as ammo, chairs, and wine bottles)

~ WILD CARDS

Here’s a quick example of what a possible Card-Combination could be (of course, you have to have these cards in your hand to do so): Musketeer card + Battle Horse card + Armor card + Pistol card + Pistol Ammo card! In this case, a Musketeer is wearing a suit of armor for battle, while sitting on top of a battle horse, having a Pistol with Ammo for Weaponry. This is a good Combination for a player to have in battle! Then add all Battle Strength numbers together, that are at the top right of these cards, to be your total Battle Strength number. It’s then your opponent’s turn to lay down cards onto the Battle Field. He either has to match your total Battle Strength number, or beat that number with his Combination; or just throw-off an ineffective card; for every player MUST play at least one (1) card for each Battle Round!

Remember, though, that all Combinations MUST MAKE SENSE to play, or else it cannot work! For instance, Pistol Ammo cannot fit a Musket card; or two (2) Servants cannot be played at the same time, unless they are being employed by officials who are able to have more than one (1) Servant in their Employ! Each card will explain what can or cannot be done; but if the instructions on the cards themselves are unclear, then consult these rules for each individual cards, and it should (since in greater detail than on each card), be explained!

In using Combinations, it’s important to follow some basic rules:

  • Only one (1) Weapon can be used per played Personality, per Battle Round (unless the Weapon is a Sword and Dagger Combination!). This rule, however, can be somewhat tricky, as seeing that ALL the Accessories can ALSO be used as Weapons also! In our illustration above, the Musketeer’s choice of Weapon was the Pistol. Therefore, the Armor was being ‘worn’ for protection only; the Ammo was merely ‘fired’ from the Pistol; and the Battle Horse was used for ‘speed and agility!’ If, on the other hand, the Pistol was NOT being used, then the ONLY weapon left to the rider was to throw the Pistol Ammo at the enemy, for the Armor (in this instance) can ONLY be used as protection upon a horse! The Armor can only be used as a weapon when you are not on a Horse! All these things are explained in the Card Details at the end of these Rules. But, basically, you can only wield one (1) weapon at a time, per played Personality; but you CAN enhance your weapons with using Accessory Cards (which are NOT being used as weapons at that time!) Again, play HAS to make sense, and the card instructions will be of use for this matter. If you are Employing several Personalities during your turn, however (see just below), then each of them can have one (1) Weapon apiece; and Accessories also.

  • You can only use one (1) Personality Card per Battle Round. However, most Personalities can actually Employ the assistance of other Personalities for help! Of course you have to have these other Personalities in your hand in order to use them. All Employed Personalities can also use Weapons and Accessories as well! For the specifics, of who can assist who, and who can Employ who, please consult the Personality Card Chart below (in the Card details section)!

  • Only one (1) Ammo Card per Battle Weapon can be used.

  • Only one (1) Wild Card, per Battle Round, per player, can be used.

These rules, though, do NOT restrict the usage of Combinations onto the Battle Field – they just help them to make sense! You will begin to see how vast your choices of Combinations can be when you understand each card better!

EMPLOY

Some, if not most, Personalities can Employ other Personalities for grand Combinations! Again, who can employ who will be listed in the detailed Card Lists at the end of these rules. When other Personalities are Employed by your main played Personality choice, they can ALSO use whatever weapons they are capable of using during that same Battle Round, causing you to add a large Battle Strength sum! And, whomever you Employ with your main choice of Personality, can also Employ whomever they are capable of Employing – all with their proper weapons and Accessories. But, of course, you have to have all these cards in your hand at a given time in order to do so! You MUST have a main choice Personality to use, and they must be played first!

DUELS

There will be times that at least two people will match total scores during a Battle Round – and sometimes even more than two will match! What happens then? A Duel is called between the one’s who have tied! What that simply means is that the one’s who have tied must Duel it out alone, without disturbance of anyone else in the game . . . that is, of course, unless someone at the table pulls out a ‘Dueling is Forbidden’ Wild Card (Yep, it can happen!), and render that ENTIRE Battle Round VOID! There would be no winners at all of the whole Battle Round in such a case! But, if that does not happen, then the Duel proceeds; which simply means that you have a personal Battle Round with each other! After a winner is declared, then ALL Cards that were used in the regular Battle Round and in the Duel are collected together, and discarded together, or is collected as a SINGLE War Journal! Still, only one point is given to the ultimate winner!

Remember, though, that Duels ONLY occur if the matched Battle Strengths are the TOP total Battle Strengths in the Battle Round. Basically, these happen to declare the ultimate winner of that Round! Matches do not count, nor do the players Duel, if they were beat by higher Battle Strength totals during that turn of play.

THROW-OFF CARDS

There will be times when you are playing a Battle Round that you simply don’t have what it takes to beat another opponent’s played cards! When this occurs, it is best to just ‘throw-off’ a useless or low Battle Strength card onto the playing field! You can also do this when you are trying to build a certain Combination in your hand to play in the future, and don’t want to use it just yet, and can just throw-off a single card for your turn, so you can wait to play your good cards later. After all, all players MUST play at least one card during each Battle Round! However, if you throw-off a Wild Card, and it doesn’t have any effect on the current play, then it’s considered totally useless and void in its function, but is a successful throw-off! For instance, you might throw-off a Rain Wild Card, but there were no guns used during the current Battle Round that were being fired; the Wild Card did not effect any game play, but did work well as a throw-off card for the player, because Wild Cards CAN be used during a Battle Round for a single player as their played card of choice – regardless if it was effective or not in game play!

CARD SET-UP FOR ‘FAMILY NIGHT RULES’

When building a good deck for Family Night Rules, there is hardly any rules involved, for it’s whatever you want to mesh together for fun playing! In the CCG (Collectible Card Game) Rules, Card set-up is more precise, but here it’s a whole lot more easy flowing – since it’s every man for himself – and the battles aren’t as organized. What I mean by that is the mere fact that in battling in CCG, you will have a particular FACTION with which you are representing – for you will be either a French Royalist, a French Cardinalist, part of the Queen’s Following, part of the Prince de Conde’s Following, an English Royalist, or an English Puritan (each of these listed are what I am referring to as ‘Factions’)! But in Family Night gaming, you will be whatever lands in your playing hand at the time! Therefore, you can add or take away from the single Family Night built deck of cards as you wish. If you do add Expansion Decks, it might be fun to have a really large deck for playing, and have at least one, if not more, of every card available for ‘Musketeers, Cavaliers, and Court Intrigue’! The ONLY cards that CANNOT be duplicated in your deck are the Named Personality Cards, for there can be only one of that person in a single universe! However, other unnamed Personality Cards, such as a Swiss Guard, can be repeated as much as you like!

WHO CAN, AND WHO CANNOT FIGHT EACH OTHER?

As you have read in the History section at the beginning of these rules, there are (as far as the Personality Cards are concerned) definite friends and enemies of each other! However, it is very possible in Family Night Rules to ignore this fact for much simpler game play. There will be times when two or more players will be laying down Personality Cards within the same Faction on the same Battle Round, and battling each other with them. For instance, two or more players may have used Musketeers within the same Battle Round. Technically, Musketeers CANNOT fight against each other! However, in the most simplified version of Family Night Rules, this simple fact can, if you so wish, be overlooked; however, and even if you decide to do so, you STILL must follow the rules of each card’s abilities and disadvantages!

But for a more challenging way of playing, I recommend that you stick with the fact that certain Personalities within Factions MUST stick together. That is, Musketeers must stick with Musketeers, and the Queen’s Loyal Following must stick with each other! This will become much clearer when each card’s abilities are read at the bottom of these rules, or upon the cards themselves.

How does this work? Well, the FIRST player who lays down the Musketeer card during one particular Battle Round (in this instance) will be the dominating player with the ‘French Royalists’ Faction; and all other players who also laid down Musketeer cards will have wasted their turn uselessly, for ALL their played cards during that one Round will have no effect whatever! But this DOES NOT mean that during the next Battle Round the same player who wasted their Musketeer card cannot play another Musketeer card! They may certainly do so when it is convenient, for each Battle Round is an entirely new scenario, and the first player to use a particular Faction will be the dominating force of that Faction for that Round! But, basically, no Faction can fight within its own self, or against each other. But the only exception to this rule is that a Musketeer can fight a Royal Guard or Cadet when they are being used by the Cardinal at that time! Even if the Guard or Cadet is being used by the Queen, the Musketeer cannot fight them, for they are, technically, both French Royalists! That is, the French Royalists Military Personnel CANNOT fight any of the Queen’s Loyal Following! But ‘Factions’ are better explained in fuller detail in the CCG Rules, just below.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A NAMED PERSONALITY DIES DURING BATTLE?

Once all cards are used up in the Draw-Pile (and are in the Discard Pile), and if the game is still in session (and after Discard Pile has been thoroughly shuffled to become the NEW Draw-Pile), then all Personalities REVIVE, and live again to battle once more!

USING WILD CARDS

When adding Wild Cards to your deck, your gaming options really start to open up! Each Wild Card, unlike the other cards in the game, DOES NOT display a Battle Strength number upon it; instead, you will simply follow the instructions listed on the card! Wild Cards are primarily used to ENHANCE battles, and to add a little depth to your gaming experience. However, they do have their limitations – such as not being able to use more than one (1) per Battle Round. However, the advantages are good – such as being able to play them at ANY given time during the Battle Round, regardless if it is your turn or not! And, once the card is used, it is simply Discarded as the others are. But, what happens if you are stuck with nothing but Wild Cards in your hand at a given time? When it becomes your turn to play, you can only throw one of them onto the Battle Field for the current Battle Round. This becomes really tough if you are one of the first players of the Battle Round to play, for you do NOT know what the other players are going to use – which could have given you the advantage of knowing the proper Wild Card to use against them! Your Wild Card, therefore, becomes a ‘throw-off’ card; especially since you HAVE to play at least one (1) card per Battle Round! If your one played Wild Card during the Round affected someone successfully, then you have lucked out! However, if it doesn’t match the current Battle Round situation, then, again, it was merely a ‘throw-off’ card. Once played, though, you CANNOT play another Wild Card the rest of the Battle Round!

Note: There will be few and various times (very rarely) that you CAN use more than one (1) Wild Card at a time . . . . It will be noted on the Card, and in the detailed card lists at the bottom of these rules. Simply, if it says you can, then . . . you can!

CCG RULES – (COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME)

Before reading these CCG Rules, please make sure that you have read the ‘Family Night’ Rules first, for the basics of the game are covered within those!

A lot of people prefer to have a Collectible Card Game (CCG) experience rather than just a quick game night [i.e. as in Family Night Rules]. If that’s the case for you, then these next set of rules will be of great interest! Even if you have played other CCG’s before and have not liked them, you will find that not only are there some similarities to other CCG’s (else this would not be one as well!), but you will notice that there are enough differences to make this game unique! Like others, this Card Game allows you to collect different kinds of Expansion Decks to collect. Basically, the Expansion Decks are as follows:

~ French Royalists

~ French Cardinalists

~ Queen Anne’s Loyal Following

~ English Royalists

~ English Puritans

~ Prince de Conde’s Loyal Following

Decks should be built to battle another; and, based upon the quick History lesson at the beginning of these rules, here’s how they can be paired:

~ French Royalists against the French Cardinalists

~ The Queen’s Loyal Following fights against the French Cardinalists. However, the Queen’s Loyal Following cannot fight against the English, nor the English against them – for hers is a political battle in France; even though it does gets bloody as well! And one of which the English, quite frankly, wouldn’t even pay attention to!

~ English Royalists against the English Puritans

~ English Royalists against the French Royalists or Cardinalists; however, the Puritans cannot be matched against anyone except the English Royalists, for theirs is a political battle as well!

~ However, and a big exception to these rules, and since the Prince de Conde was a rather independent thinking man, and is not loyal to ANY one Faction, he can actually fight ANY Faction he so chooses!

But, to make this idea simpler, here’s a chart to help:

                “French Royalists” vs. “French Cardinalists”

“French Cardinalists” vs. “Queen’s Loyal Following”

                “English Royalists” vs. “English Puritans”

                “English Royalists” vs. “French Royalists”

                “English Royalists” vs. “French Cardinalists”

“Prince de Conde’s Loyal Following” against EVERYONE!

Note: The French Cadets of the Guards can either be Employed by the King or the Cardinal; but if you’re building a Cardinalist Deck, then your Cadets will, naturally, fight against the Queen or King! They become full French Cardinalists! The same is true with other Personalities as well; once they’re Employed by a particular Faction (if they are able to be Employed by them, that is), then for that Faction they will fight!

At first all this may sound a bit confusing; but, again, after a careful study of each card’s capability, and after an understanding of the History that was listed at the beginning of these Rules, you will begin to make sense of it all! And, remember, that CCG is setup for either ‘Individual Play,’ or for ‘Teams.’ I’ll, of course, cover both.

‘INDIVIDUAL PLAY’ RULES FOR CCG

Just like in the ‘Family Night Rules,’ I will have mercy on the game-player and will provide a ‘Simpler’ game play as well as the more ‘Detailed’ version; however, I really do NOT suggest the Simpler version of the game for players, seeing as the most in-depth game-play will result in what I am calling ‘Detailed.’ But don’t let the word ‘Detailed’ fool you, for it’s not really complicated, but just more detailed into Historical accuracy, and of who a Personality might have interacted with, and who they might have fought! I will go over both Simple and Detailed Rules in their own sections.

‘SIMPLER RULES’ FOR ‘INDIVIDUAL PLAY’

As in ‘Family Night’ Rules, the Simpler Rules allows players to mix and match cards onto the table of play. There are two or more players at the table, naturally, and all have their own individual built decks to play; but there is a mixture of several French Royalists players; some Queen’s Loyal Following players; or even some English Puritan players! But what can be even more surprising, is that an individual might have built a ‘MIXED Deck’ for ‘Individual Play!’ What’s that? Simply, it’s a deck that has no followed theme or Faction, and is just a mixed mesh of all of the gaming cards! Even if a player wishes to do such a thing, they still MUST follow the special Rules in the ‘CARD SETUP FOR CCG’ section, which follows the CCG Rules, and explains how decks must be built.

Basically, players may be fighting Musketeer against Musketeer, and Faction against Faction! In such a case, it’s just all-out-war! But even though you may see more than one Porthos ‘Named’ Personality upon the game table at a given time, you still may NOT have more than one (1) named Personality in your personal Deck when you build it.

‘DETAILED RULES’ FOR “INDIVIDUAL PLAY’

Detailed Rules will actually make more sense than ‘Simpler Rules’ whenever you begin to understand individual card functionality. Also, once this is learned, game-play will actually be more fun!

Seeing as there are two or more players, then each participant should have more than one (1) type of Deck at the game. In other words, gaming for ‘Detailed Rules’ cannot work if all players are using French Royalist Decks against each other, or all players are using French Cardinalist Decks against each other! Also, things have to be evened out – such as, there cannot be two (2) Cardinalist Decks against one (1) Royalist Deck! Before we get deeper, though, let’s determine the number of players at your gaming table, since that WILL have much to do with how you play.

GAME SETUP FOR A CERTAIN NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

Depending on how many people are gathered at the table for game-play, there has to be a certain setup for the number of players that are playing. Since the ‘Factions’ can fight only specific other Factions, this Rule will be important for proper game-flow. Here’s the chart:

# of players    Factions who can fight one another

2                     1 French Royalist vs. 1 French Cardinalist                      or

1 French Cardinalist vs. 1 Queen’s Loyal Following       or

1 English Royalist vs. 1 English Puritan                          or

1 English Royalist vs. 1 French Royalist                         or

1 English Royalist vs. 1 French Cardinalist                     or

1 Prince de Conde’s Loyal Following against any other one!

3                      1 French Royalist vs. 1 French Cardinalist and 1 English Royalist, or

1 French Royalist vs. 1 French Cardinalist & Prince Conde Following, or

1 French Royalist vs. Prince Conde Following & 1 English Royalist, or

1 Prince Conde Following vs. 1 French Cardinalist & 1 English Royalist, or

                        1 Prince Conde Following vs. 1 French Cardinalist & 1 Queen’s Following

4                     Works one of two ways . . . . First:

1 French Royalist vs. 1 French Cardinalist vs.

1 English Royalist vs. 1 Prince de Conde Following!

Or, secondly, you can have two separate groups (each group of twos

completely ignoring the other) and both following the 2 player

ideas at the beginning of this chart.

When you get more than four (4) players at your table, you will then have to follow ‘Team Rules’ [covered just below].

Some similarities and differences for ‘Individual Play’ to ‘Family Night Rules’ will be as follows: (and if a rule is not covered, then it is the same as ‘Family Night’ Rules)

~ An agreed upon total score must be decided BEFORE gaming begins; from which ultimate score a winner can be declared.

~ Each player MUST shuffle their own personal Decks completely. Once this is done, all players will then set their cards down, in one single pile, in front of them, face-down. This pile becomes their own Draw-Pile.

~ Each player will draw seven (7) cards from their own Draw-Pile. When that player uses the last card out of their hand for a Battle Round, they will then draw another seven cards. However, they CANNOT draw anymore cards into their hand UNLESS ALL cards from their hand have been used! Once Draw-Pile is depleted, and if player has made War Journals, and game is still in session, then points need to be noted; cards collected together; shuffled; and a new Draw-Pile made.

~ Player to go first must be agreed upon by the casting of lots of some sorts – tossing a coin; rock, paper, scissors; or, more simply, everyone, after shuffling their individual decks thoroughly [which has to be done by everyone anyway], flips over the TOP card from their deck. Highest drawn card [Battle Strength] begins. Of course, any one who pulled a Wild Card cannot go first, for there’s no number on the card! Drawn Cards that were used to decide on who goes first, must be discarded in each player’s own personal Discard Pile. And if everyone drew a Wild Card? Just draw again!

~ All players will be handling their own decks. There is no reason that another player should touch another player’s deck! In fact, doing so is against these Rules. And in the case of a Wild Card that says you can look at another player’s hand, you must get up from your chair, walk behind them, and look over their shoulder as they show you their hand. All this is done WITHOUT you having to touch them.

~ Game play for each player will take place in their own designated area on the table. Other player’s cards will NOT mix with yours!

~ There will NOT be a single dealer for the game. Each player serves as their own dealer, for their own deck becomes their own Draw-Pile.

~ Player’s Turns will go CLOCKWISE around the table, until every person has a turn to play. This will be one Battle! Or, one Battle Round!’  The winner of the last Round will begin the next.

~ There CAN be a single ‘Score-Keeper’ in Individual Play if so wished. Else, all players should keep up with their own scores – which really might be best! Therefore, each player must have their own pencil and paper to keep score with.

~ ‘War Journals’ can be kept if wished; however, there will be (as just pointed out) a personal Discard Pile for each player. After a player’s Draw-Pile has been depleted, the player must then count all their War Journals (points), then jot the total points down on their paper. After which, their deck must be completely and thoroughly shuffled once again to begin a new Draw-Pile.

~ You should have your own work area in front of you to work with, and will have different piles of cards to do different things (such as having a Draw-Pile, a Discard Pile, and your personal Battle Field). And unless the cards are in actual battle, they need to stay hidden from the other players!

~ Your personal Battle Field is indeed within your own playing area, but needs to be out far enough onto the table area for the others to be able to see them clearly. No cards should be hidden from other players at all, unless you have a Cloak that was designed to hide certain Personalities, Weapons, and Accessories!

‘TEAMS’ RULES FOR CCG

Rules will be similar to ‘Individual Play’ Rules, but it’s a MUST that the number of players at the table are EVEN [such as four players; six players; eight players; etc], instead of ODD [such as three players; five players; seven players; etc]. Other than an even number of players would mean that one side would be unfairly matched against the other, and winning would almost be guaranteed by the team with the extra player! The gaming is simple, for all you are doing is picking which Team will be representing which Faction.  Also, you can consult the ‘Game Setup for a Certain Number of Participants’ Chart in the ‘Individual Play Rules’ for more in depth ideas on who can fight who!

  • In the four (4) player scenario (for there needs to be at least four players in order to do Teams!), only two Factions can be represented! It can be as follows:

2 French Royalists vs. 2 French Cardinalists                  or

2 French Cardinalists vs. 2 Queen’s Loyal Following     or

2 English Royalists vs. 2 English Puritans                      or

2 English Royalists vs. 2 French Royalists                     or

2 English Royalists vs. 2 French Cardinalists                 or

2 Prince de Conde’s Loyal Following against any other

two player Faction (of the same Faction)!

  • In the six (6) player scenario, there are actually two different ways to play – either two players each can be on Teams, with each Team of two’s representing one of three Factions apiece (such as 2 ‘French Royalists,’ 2 ‘French Cardinalists,’ and 2 ‘English Royalists’); or, three (3) players on each Team, representing two separate Factions!

  • In the eight (8) player scenario, there will be four players on each team, who will represent one of two Factions.

  • In the ten (10) player scenario, which works similar to the eight player version, there will be five players on each Team, representing one of two Factions each.

  • In the twelve (12) player scenario, which works similar to the six player version, there can be two different was to play – either three players each can be on Teams, with each Team of three’s representing one of three Factions apiece (such as 3 ‘French Royalists,’ 3 ‘French Cardinalists,’ and 3 ‘English Royalist’); or, six players on each Team, representing two!

After choosing who will be on what Team, then all players must seat themselves at their proper locations at the playing table. Teams must sit together, and not scattered at different locations at the table – such as between other players on the other Team(s)! Each player MUST shuffle their own decks completely to form their Draw-Pile. When each player places their cards in their own hands, they must be out of sight from everyone else (even their own Teammates) and visible ONLY to themselves! Even if a Wild Card allows you to look at someone else’s hand, it MUST be an Enemy’s that you see, and not your own Teammate! A single player must be chosen to be the ‘Score-Keeper’ for both Teams, so they will need pencil and paper to do so. This Score-Keeper will have to assign names for each Team, such as ‘The French Royalists,’ The French Cardinalists,’ ‘The Queen’s Loyal Following,’ ‘The English Royalists,’ ‘The English Puritans,’ or ‘Prince de Conde’s Loyal Following!’

Even though in Teams, each person is trying their hardest to get that ultimate Battle Strength score for each Battle Round so they can gain a point. In a lot of cases, you will be outdoing your own Teammates in an attempt to beat out the other Team! However, don’t do this on purpose, for you are NOT in competition with your own Team. As much as possible, Teammates should work together, and not against each other! Do as much working with them as you can, without looking at their Cards – for that’s forbidden! But working together is NOT forbidden; in fact, it’s highly encouraged! You might have to ‘throw-off’ sometimes (playing a small Card, such as a ‘Vase’ only [yes, even small ‘throw-off’ cards come in handy!) if you see one of your Teammates doing really good. But it’s hard to assume anything when there are some very unpredictable Wild Cards floating around out there! Game-play will ALWAYS be different, so you never know what to expect! During play, strategy is greatly needed, as well as skill . . . and a little luck never hurts either! Your ultimate goal, of course, is doing all you can to prevent the other Team from winning, while trying to gain as much points as you can for yours! And, it’s ok if there is more than one person playing the same cards (even Named Personality Cards) on your Team, for they’ll both still count in the battle! To get into fuller details of the Basic Function of the game, please read the ‘Family Night Rules’ at the beginning!

FURTHER RULES FOR CCG [FOR TEAMS AND INDIVIDUAL PLAY]

Unless you’re playing the Simpler version of CCG, then mixing all cards together is really reserved for the Deck that was created for ‘Family Night Rules’ only; but for Detailed CCG rules, all players will maintain and keep all the cards that they have collected on their own! This will also give a sense of versatility to the game, for certainly everyone’s deck will be different from the others – even those of their friends who are on the same Teams!

Even though the Expansions were created for one particular Faction (such as Cardinalists, Royalists, or the Queen’s Loyal Following), all Expansion Decks truly contain Cards that ALL Built Decks can use! In other words, the MAJORITY of the Cards found in each Expansion Deck are different from the others, and you will find something new and useful in EACH Expansion Deck that will work with ANY Deck! But don’t get me wrong, not EVERY Card created will work with every Deck. It’ll take a little investigating with the Card Details to see what will work best for your Ultimate Deck!

CARD SET-UP FOR CCG

You might want to have more than one (1) created deck for yourself, since you don’t know what kind of deck a friend of yours might pull on you! For the serious collector, it’s recommended to have at least one (1) deck for each Faction; also, you may wish to have secondary decks for each Faction as well, with different cards than your first sets. It’s important to build your personal decks according to the below rules for maximum game-play experience; and for the simple fact that others will be following these rules as well – so please be fair, for some cards truly out-do others! Depending on the size deck you want to build, you will need a certain amount of the different kinds of cards to use within. By building Decks, it’s a whole lot different than just having a single deck for ‘Family Night,’ because the Family Night deck is merely a thrown-together set of cards, and it’s anyone’s guess who’ll end up with what! But it’s still fun to play that way, though!

The following Charts are to guide you in building a proper deck for game-play, and will consist of a 52 card deck; a 72 card deck; a 100 card deck; and a 124 card deck. However, it doesn’t matter what size your deck is when playing a game, for you will be able to use it against any other sized deck! In other words, even if you have only a 52 card deck, and your opponent has 124 cards, you can still play successfully against them. What you do is when your Draw-Pile is depleted, simply shuffle them again to make a fresh Draw-Pile, and continue playing on!

SMALL 52 CARD SET

~ Fifteen (15) Personalities (both Named and Unnamed) with no more than three (3) High Ranking Officers

~ Seven (7) Weaponry Cards

~ Fifteen (15) Battle Accessory Cards

~ Fifteen (15) Wild Cards

~ CANNOT HAVE A ‘Political Intrigue’ or a ‘Siege of La Rochelle’ Wild Card in only a 52 Card Set! You must have at least a 72 Card Set to be able to place them within! These are really strong cards, and it’s best to have a bigger stack than what one would find in the Starter Deck before you start toying with such power!

~ CAN ONLY HAVE ONE (1) Sword Card! Again, this is a really strong card; but at least you can have one!

~ CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN ONE (1) ‘NAMED’ PERSONALITY CARDS WITH THE SAME NAME! In other words, you cannot have two Cardinal Richelieu, Milady, Treville, d’Artagnan, etc, in one (1) complete deck! You can certainly have more than one of the cards marked simply ‘Musketeer,’ ‘Cardinal’s Guard,’ ‘Servant,’ etc, for these are soldiers and servants in general, without being one actual named character in the game. The same is true for ‘Family Night Rules’ – there can’t be more than one Porthos in a single deck, for two of him doesn’t exist in the same universe! A bit contrary to this Rule, however, is if you are Teamed up with other players in the CCG Teammate version! As was said, you can only have one of each named Personality in your deck – but so can your partner(s), who just may have a Porthos as well! But that’s ok, for it really cannot be helped, and it will not interrupt game flow.

~ Repeats of Battle Weaponry Cards are acceptable; however, you cannot have more than four (4) of a single kind in a 52 card deck!

~ Only one (1) repeat of each Wild Card is allowed in this size deck (except the ‘Political Intrigue’ and ‘Siege of La Rochelle,’ of course!)! Other than that, it’s highly recommended to have a good variety of Wild Cards, and perhaps fifteen (15) different ones!!

~ You need to have at least one (1) gun (either a musket or pistol), and at least two rounds of shots for the proper weapon. However, it’s recommended to have, perhaps, two to three guns in your set, with at least two rounds of shot each for them.

~ Don’t have a lot of repeats in your set . . . it keeps it more interesting to pull out something new! In other words, you might have four (4) Chairs, four (4) Vases, and four (4) Stools in your set already, so don’t add four (4) Armor, 4 Helmets, 4 daggers, 4 pistols, etc., into your set as well . . . consistency is nice, but too much is boring!

Of course, it’s going to take testing of the sets to see what will work best for you! Try to follow these rules, for others will be doing the same, and you don’t want to pull out four (4) Sword Cards on them when they only have one (1)! Always keep extra Cards that you don’t use today, because you just might need them tomorrow . . . or, at least you can trade them with your friends if you wish, who perhaps have that one card you’ve been looking for!

MEDIUM 72 CARD SET

For fuller explanation of these Rules, see the detailed information for the 52 card deck!

~ 20 Personalities (no more than four (4) High Ranking Officers; 10 Weapons; 21 Battle Accessories; and 21 Wild Cards!

~ You can have ONE (1) of each ‘Political Intrigue’ and ‘Siege of La Rochelle’ Wild Card!

~ Two (2) Sword Cards!

~ NO MORE THAN ONE (1) ‘NAMED’ PERSONALITY CARDS OF THE SAME NAME!

~ Repeats of Battle Weaponry Cards are fine; but, you cannot have more than five (5) of each!

~ You still can only have two (2) repeats of any Wild Card in your deck (except the ‘Political Intrigue’ and ‘Siege of La Rochelle,’ of course!).

~ At least two (2) guns (either a musket or pistol), and at least four rounds of shots for the proper weapon. However, it’s recommended to have, perhaps, three (3) to four (4) guns in your set, with at least five (5) to six (6) rounds of shot each for them. A good amount of guns and ammo were given in the Starter Deck.

~ At least two Battle Horses – if not three! Or, two or three Regular Horses – or mixed!

~ Don’t have a lot of repeats . . . it keeps it more interesting to pull out something new!

LARGE 100 CARD SET

As you can see with the 52 and the 72 Card Sets, just keep ‘em growing the same way – you’ll get the hang of it! Also, I have created a quick glance chart just below to help out. But, here are the necessaries for the 100 Set:

~ Just like in the 72 Set, you can ONLY have ONE (1) of each ‘Political Intrigue’ and ‘Siege of La Rochelle’ Wild Card! You will not be able to have two (2) of each of these Wild Cards until you build a 1X (Extra Large) Set of 124 Cards!

~ Can have four (4) Sword Cards in this Set!

~ No more than five (5) High Ranking Officers

1X (EXTRA LARGE) 124 CARD SET

~ You may have two (2) each of ‘Political Intrigue’ and ‘Siege of La Rochelle’ Wild Cards in this Set!

~ Six (6) Sword Cards!

~ No more than six (6) High Ranking Officers

Also, High Officials CANNOT be Employed by any other Personality, unless it otherwise states it on the card! Also, in these charts, when you see +5; +10; - (minus) 5; then you must know that it’s concerning your Battle Strength! Personalities can ONLY Employ

Immune to the Brand of the Fleur-de-Lis! Cannot use ANY weapons! ITEMS USAGE: None!

Note: Basically, no French Royalists or any of Queen Anne’s Loyal Following can fight against King Louis himself, UNLESS they are Employed by Cardinal Richelieu; and the only Personalities who can be Employed by Richelieu from the two factions are the Cadets of the Guards and the Royal Guards – all else are immune to his briberies! If the Cardinal himself is Employed by the King, no Personalities AT ALL from the French Royalists, Queen’s Following or the Cardinalists can fight the King!

Name:                                  Color Code/                                 Class/Category:    BtleStr:

~ Sword                               Grey/Battle Warrior                      Battle Weaponry         14

The Choice of every gentleman! The Sword is the perfect Swashbuckling Weapon! Can be Combined with a Dagger Card! If a “Sword Broke During Battle” Wild Card is used, Sword becomes ineffective, and cannot be taken as Spoil!

~ Cannon – With One Shot    Grey/Battle Warrior                     Battle Weaponry         10

~ Pike                                    Grey/Battle Warrior                     Battle Weaponry          8

~ Flintlock Musket                 Grey/Battle Warrior                     Battle Weaponry          8

With the invention of the Flintlock system in the early seventeenth century, the steps for loading and firing their gun was shorter than it had been when the Musketeer used the Matchlock System – giving the soldier a much better and faster gun to work with on the Battle Field! When a piece of flint (which was gripped in the cock of the gun) was released, it struck against a serrated piece of metal, causing sparks to ignite the priming powder in the pan, which in turn ignited the gunpowder in the gun chamber, which in turn forced the ball out of the smooth bore passage! If you have no Ammo, can be used as a Club! +5 when used by a Musketeer or Cardinal’s Guard!

~ Wheel-lock Pistol               Orange/High Ranking Officer       Battle Weaponry           8

Very expensive to make, this pistol has always been the choice of High Ranking Officers, beginning in the mid-sixteenth century! The secret was the wheel which spun rapidly when the trigger was squeezed, causing sparks to fly instantly, igniting the priming powder in the pan, which in turn ignited the gunpowder in the gun chamber, which in turn forced the ball out of the smooth bore passage! If you have no Ammo, can be used as a Club!

NOTE: Cannot be used upon a horse WITHOUT Ammo!

~ Halberd                               Grey/Battle Warrior                    Battle Weaponry           7

A Halberdier was the main soldier who wielded this weapon! Beginning with Swiss soldiers in the sixteenth century, the Halberd proved to be an excellent weapon during battles!

~ Matchlock Musket               Grey/Battle Warrior                    Battle Weaponry           7

Even though the Harquebus (or Arquebus) was credited with being the first ‘official’ gun for warring, the Matchlock Musket would be the grand invention of the sixteenth century that would rapidly replace it! Even though the Flintlock surpassed the Matchlock in speed for loading and firing, the Matchlock would still be in use for most of the seventeenth century! Gripping a burning match in the cock, the soldier merely had to squeeze the trigger to ignite the priming powder in the pan, which in turn ignited the gunpowder in the gun chamber, which in turn forced the ball out of the smooth bore passage! If you have no Ammo, can be used as a Club! +3 when used by a Musketeer or Cardinal’s Guard!

~ Flintlock Pistol                     Beige/Neutral                             Battle Weaponry           6

Small version of the Musket firearm!

NOTE: Cannot be used upon a horse WITHOUT Ammo!

~ Dagger                                Beige/Neutral                              Battle Weaponry           4

Even though ideal for fencing along with the sword, the dagger was also useful as an assassin’s tool for the Secret Agent, or even used as a missile weapon! CAN be used with a Sword, for extra Battle Strength! If used in this manner, it cannot be thrown! If, on the other hand, is used alone, it can be thrown for an additional +5 to Battle Strength! Sword & Dagger Combination CANNOT be used together while riding upon a Horse!

BATTLE ACCESSORY CARDS

Also, they can be used as a Weapon (instead of using a regular Weaponry Card), or just as an Accessory, which can accompany a weapon – if the card allows you to do so!

If EMPTY Bottle is again taken as Spoil after use, can be used one (1) last time to merely smash over opponent, with a Battle Strength of 2!

~ Guitar                                  Beige/Neutral                                Battle Accessory              2

You were interrupted serenading your love; use instrument to bash over offender’s head! Once used, CANNOT be taken as Spoil, for it’s broke!

~ Cloak                                  Beige/Neutral                                Battle Accessory               1

If used alone, can be used to smack enemy! However, the best use of this item is that it can be used to HIDE other items during one (1) Battle Round – which still gives you one (1) added Battle Strength to your total sum! After everyone else has participated during Round, you must then uncover your hidden items! What can be hidden for that length of time? A Personality; a Sword; a Dagger; a Pistol; Ammo; Body Armor; Battle Helmet; Musket Stand; Vase; and a Bottle of Wine or Champagne, along with poison! To hide cards, simply place all in one (1) stack, with Cloak (face-up) on top!

~ Extra Gun and Priming Powder       Beige/Neutral                     Battle Accessory                1

Sometimes you need extra powder to help your Musket or Pistol along! However, can ONLY be combined with a Musket or Pistol IF you have Ammo to use also! Other than this, the powder can be used to fling in the eyes of an opponent!

WILD CARDS

Color = Purple

Each player can only use one (1) Wild Card per Battle Round. Used Wild Cards MUST be Discarded after use!

Name and Description

~ Ambush!

At few and various times, Ambushes can occur when you least expect them! This time, however, you’re the one who does the Ambush on all your opponents! Double your current total Battle Strength score!

~ Artillery

Field Guns were of great use to the military for picking off infantry at a long distance! Double your Cannon card Battle Strength this Battle Round! If you’re using a Fused Cannon Ball with your Cannon (but ONLY if you use it with a Cannon), then you can even double the Fused Ball Battle Strength as well!

~ Assassination!

An assassin’s dagger can come flying in when it’s least expected! Can be used to kill ANY one (1) played Personality Card, of your choice, upon the Battle Field! If Combined with a Dagger Weaponry Card, can actually kill two (2) Personalities of one (1) player, of your choice!

~ Bag of Gold Coins

Buy the top two (2) cards from Draw-Pile with this Wild Card, and place them directly into your hand! Discard ‘Bag of Gold Coins’ Wild Card after usage.

~ Bandages

How can you avoid wounds during Battle? Here’s your chance to not only wrap your wounds, but to give yourself a new burst of energy for a victorious Battle! +5 added per played Personality of yours during this Battle Round!

~ Brand of the Fleur-de-lis

Mark of a common criminal, which is branded upon the shoulder by the hot iron of an executioner! Brand only one (1) opponent’s Personality Card of your choice (unless they are immune). That Personality is rendered USELESS for the Battle Round! Discard both Personality and this Wild Card after Round. Some Personalities are immune to the brand, and will be noted on their card.

~ Cart Blanche

“It is by my order and for the good of the state that the bearer of this has done what he has done.” signed: Richelieu. For French Personalities ONLY! Double your total Battle Strength during a single Battle Round! Also, permission is granted for Duels, and cannot be voided by a “Dueling is Forbidden” Wild Card! However, the Cart Blanche CAN be voided by a ‘Forgery’ Wild Card!

~ Combination

You can use TWO weapons during this Battle Round for just one (1) Personality; also can be used without a Personality. Both weapons can be used along with their proper Accessories (such as Ammo with Musket). If you are already using a Sword and Dagger Combination, you cannot use this Wild Card, because you already are using two!

~ Counterfeit Accusation

Used when an opponent buys cards with a bag of gold coins (i.e. the Wild Card which said they could do so!) Being offended by the accusation, the accused must fight a Duel with you! One (1) personal Battle Round (or Duel) issues between you two (unless it’s voided by a ‘Dulling is Forbidden’ Wild Card; in which case, there’s no winner, and no card can be bought). If you win, the counterfeiter must Discard one (1) card of their choice from their hand. But, if you lose, you must Discard one (1) Card of your choice from your hand! This is a separate skirmish from a regular Battle Round, and does NOT effect regular game-play!

~ Declaration of War

Personal Battle Round between you and opponent of your choice! In ‘Family Night Rules,’ Winner steals two (2) cards from the defeated opponent’s hand, of opponent’s choice! In ‘CCG Rules,’ Winner causes loser to Discard two (2) cards (of loser’s choice) from their hand. If opponent only has one (1) card in their hand at the time, they will have to Discard one (1)  card the next time they receive more in their hand; or, in the first scenario, will have to owe the winner one (1) card.

~ Distracted

Sometimes in battle, something catches your attention without warning! Pick one (1) opponent to Distract! One (1) played Personality Card of theirs (of your choice) is rendered useless this Battle Round, as well as the weapons and Accessories that the Personality is using.

~ Drunkenness!

Nothing like getting the Enemy completely Drunk so their perception will be off when you are battling them!  - (minus) 5 on ALL opponent’s Personality Cards in play – except yours! If used with Wine or Champagne, then – (minus) 10! If used w/poison (yes, you can use two (2) Wild Cards this time!), Use to kill instantly two (2) played Personalities of a single opponent of your choice! If used w/Wine or Champagne, you can STILL use OTHER Card Combinations as normal, since Wine/Champagne’s Battle Strength is useless (see Card instructions for Wine/Champagne, when they’re mixed with poison, for more information)!

~ Duel!

Personal Battle Round between you and one (1) opponent of your choice! Winner gains one (1) point, or War Journal. This Duel, however, does not affect current Battle Round – this is a separate skirmish! Results will be separate from current normal Battle Round between all combatants.

~ Dueling is Forbidden!

If a Duel breaks out between some players, you may throw this Wild Card out onto the Battle Field. The Duel is immediately called off, and no winner is declared! If a Duel had been fought due to top matching Battle Strengths during a Battle Round, then the ENTIRE Round is considered VOID – no winner’s declared!

~ Escape From Prison!

If one of your Personalities has been taken prisoner, or was taken to the Bastille, use this Wild Card to bail them out! Once bailed, you may place them back into your hand and use the escaped card immediately!

~ Fleur-de-lis / Royal Power

The Fleur-de-Lis (or Lilly Flower) was the official image of Royal Power in many countries! Doubles the Power (Battle Strength) of any one (1) High Official for a single Battle Round!

~ Forgery

ANY document an opponent throws out into play is rendered useless! This would include: Royal Pardon; Cart Blanche; Declaration of War; and Treaty of Peace.

~ Gambling

Gamble (i.e. a single Battle Round) between you and one (1) player of your choice. Winner gets the top two (2) cards from Draw-Pile to place into their hand! Loser must Discard two (2) cards (of their choice) from their hand!  In ‘Family Night Rules,’ and if you so wish to do, winner can actually take two (2) cards (of opponent’s choice) away from the loser, and place them directly into the winner’s hand! If this happens, no cards can be drawn from Draw-Pile. This Round has NOTHING to do with regular Battle Round, and is done afterwards!

~ Imprisoned in the Bastille

Cause one (1) opponent’s played Personality Card to be placed into prison! In other words, opponent has to place the Personality Card off from the Battle Field and into a place of their choice in their own personal area face-up. This card is useless for the rest of the Battle Round, unless opponent has a “Escape From Prison” Wild Card to bail them out! This CANNOT be used against High Officials! In Family Night Rules, this Wild Card can be placed near the Personality Card for a reminder. In CCG Rules, the card is useless for the REMAINDER of the Game (and can’t even be used to reshuffle for the Draw-Pile), unless opponent can produce the “Escape From Prison” Wild Card to break them free!

~ Inn

The Inn or Tavern was a favorite place for people to stop and get refreshed with food and drink! Refresh all your played Personality Cards +5 each (added to their Battle Strength) this Battle Round.

~ Kidnapped!

One opponent of your choice has to Discard one (1) Personality Card (of YOUR choice) that’s currently in play upon the Battle Field! In Family Night Rules, you can actually place the Personality Card directly into your hand; and can be used by you on the very next Battle Round if you so wish! The kidnapped Personality and their used Items have been rendered useless this Battle Round!

~ Misfire! / Flash in the Pan!

It can happen! When firing a weapon, it can actually ‘misfire,’ and nothing happen! One (1) played Musket or Pistol does NOT fire for an opponent of your choice. Gun, and Personality that was using the gun, is rendered useless! Can ONLY be used if the opponent was Combining the Weapon with Ammo! Does not work with Cannon!

~ Missed!

One (1) opponent of choice misses with a single ‘fired’ Musket, Pistol, or thrown dagger! Fired means gun HAS been Combined with an Ammo Card.

~ Musket Formation

A large volley of Musket firing! Double your Musket and Musket Ammo Card Battle Strengths this Battle Round!

~ Overcome Ambush!

If any opponent has used an Ambush Wild Card this Battle Round, its effect is now VOID! The Ambush has successfully been overcome!

~ Phalanx Formation of Pikes

Boxed-in, squared, formation of Pikemen; who group together for greater strength! Double the Battle Strength of all your played Pike Cards, and your Pikeman Personality Cards!

~ Poison

Instantly kills one (1) played Personality of your choice on the Battle Field!  If mixed in either Champagne or Wine, you can choose two (2) played Personalities of a single opponent to kill! If Wine or Champagne (that’s mixed with the poison) is taken as Spoil, it can be used only one (1) other time, then its contents is empty! When combining with Personalities, only Secret Agents of the Cardinalists can use – except for a few, and will be noted on their cards – and they will be able to, with this poison, kill one (1) Personality apiece from up to three (3) Opponent’s! However, if Secret Agent mixes the Poison with Wine or Champagne, then they can kill up to four (4) Personalities from four (4) different opponents! But, if there are not four (4) opponent’s available, they can kill ONLY within the number of opponent’s that there are, and still only one (1) Personality apiece from each one. Note: Unlike other Wild Cards, you can sometimes you CAN combine the Poison Wild Card with other Wild Cards; it will be noted where!

~ Political Intrigue

Automatic Battle Round Win for user! The only way to void this card is that the same Wild Card has to be played by an opponent. In such a case, no winner is declared this Round!

~ Queen’s Diamond Ring

Use this Wild Card to buy the top two (2) cards from Draw-Pile, to place directly into your hand! Queen Anne herself can collect from this card for three (3) Battle Rounds! First, the Queen has to be used for battling before she can collect the first go-around; after the Round is over, set Queen aside (but face-up, and out of the way) for two more Battle Rounds. However, the Queen does NOT participate in the other two Battle Rounds! After third Round, Discard the Queen and the ‘Queen’s Diamond Ring’ Wild Card! Cards collected can be played immediately!

~ Rain!

Gunpowder and Priming Powder is rendered wet and useless for all currently played Muskets and Pistols (that are Combined with Ammo)  and Cannons this Battle Round – including your own, if you’ve used any! However, Muskets and Pistols that were ORIGINALLY being used as clubs only (i.e. they have no Ammo) are NOT affected! Cannons are automatically affected.

~ Retreat!

When a Battle Round is lost, you can place ALL of your Personality Cards (who can ride regular Horses) and useful Weaponry and Accessory Cards (that can be used upon Horses [see Horse Cards for information]) back into your hand! Fired Ammo Cards have been wasted, and cannot be retrieved; also, if anything was smashed or broken, it cannot be retrieved either! Note: Fired means that Ammo have been Combined with a Gun!

~ Retreat in Carriage!

For High Officials, Secret Agents, and Ladies ONLY! If you’ve lost a Battle Round, you can place ALL your played High Officials, Secret Agents, or any Lady Personality, and their Weaponry and Accessory Cards, back into your hand! Fired Ammo Cards have been wasted, and cannot be retrieved! Also, any broken Accessories cannot be taken either!

Note: Fired means that Ammo have been Combined with a Gun!

~ Royal Pardon

If you’ve lost a Battle Round, use this to place ALL o f your played Personality Cards (along with their Weapons and Accessories [that have NOT been fired or broken]) back into your hand! You’ll be able to use them again for another Battle Round! Note: Fired means that Ammo have been Combined with a Gun!

~ Siege of La Rochelle

The great battle between France and England in the early 1600’s, which resulted in victory for the French! ALL English Personality Cards in anyone’s hand, or upon the Battle Field (including yours!), whether in play or not, MUST be discarded! If any English are in the middle of a Battle right now, they have (along with any of their weaponry or Accessories) NO effect! However, all player’s Draw-Piles are safe!

~ Servant’s Disguise

Sometimes, you have to beat a retreat! If so, what better way to escape notice than to disguise yourself? If you’ve lost a Battle Round, use this Wild Card to place one (1) of YOUR played Personality Cards (of your choice) back into your hand! This is for Personalities ONLY, and NOT Weaponry or Accessories! Sorry, does NOT work with ANY Servants!

~ Spoils of War

‘Family Night Rules’: after a battle, take all used Weapons & Accessory Cards (that have not been broken), and place them into your hand! Cannot include ‘fired’ Ammo (fired means that the gun had been Combined with an Ammo Card!) ‘CCG Rules’: add all [except your own] Battle Strength Totals upon table (of Weapons & Accessories ONLY that have not been broken, or Ammo that has been fired), and you can use the Total over your next four turns! You can either use the entire total on the very next Battle Round, or divide it between the four Rounds. However you want to do it.

~ Spy!

They’re here, they’re there, they’re everywhere! And they’re watching everything! You can now become a Spy! See two (2) opponent’s, of your choice, entire hand! But only YOU can see them.

~ Spyglass

The Tools of a spy can be different from person to person! Here’s a chance to be a spy, and to use a Spyglass! See any one (1) opponent, of your choice, entire hand! Only YOU can see it.

~ Steal From Enemy

As with the Spyglass Wild Card, you can take a look at one (1) opponent, of your choice, entire hand; but this time you can actually steal from them! In CCG Rules, you can choose one (1) weapon of your choice, along with all its Ammo (if available), and make Enemy Discard them. In Family Night Rules, you can actually take the available cards and place them in your own hand! If Enemy has NO Weaponry Card, you cannot take anything!

~ Sword Broke During Fight

Yes, it can happen! During a fight, a blade can actually snap! Effects one (1) opponent’s sword (only one [1] Sword) of your choice during a single Battle Round or Duel! The Personality (if used) becomes ineffective as well! Since Sword is broken, it cannot be taken as spoil, and must be Discarded after Round!

~ Taken Prisoner!

In Family Night Rules, this Wild Card can be placed near Personality Card for a reminder. In CCG Rules, the card is useless for the REMAINDER of the Game (and can’t even be used to reshuffle for the Draw-Pile), unless opponent can produce the “Escape From Prison” Wild Card to break them free!

~ Treaty of Peace

Peace between Factions can be very useful at times – especially when you are in danger of losing a battle! Use to temporarily gain friendship with the Faction, so that you, also, can claim victory! Declare after a Battle Round toward the battle winner. You will also receive one (1) battle point along with them!

~ Twelve Diamond Studs

The 12 studs that were a gift from Louis XIII to Queen Anne, that Anne foolishly gave to Buckingham as a token of her feelings for him! Richelieu found out, and wanted 2 to be stolen, with the help of Milady and Rochefort, from Buckingham to further his plans to ruin the Queen! D’Artagnan, however, came to her rescue, and got them back in time! In CCG Rules, use with d’Artagnan, Queen Anne, Buckingham, Richelieu, Milady or Rochefort to take two (2) cards from one (1) opponent’s hand, and cause them to be discarded! You can choose opponent, but opponent can choose the cards! If opponent’ only has one (1) card, then they only have to discard that one (1), and will not owe one in the future! Their Draw-Pile is also safe! In Family Night Rules, the cards can actually be placed into your hand, and be used on the very next Battle Round! Note: You CANNOT see opponent’s hand!

~ Two Stolen Diamond Studs

King Louis XIII gave Queen Anne 12 Diamond Studs as a gift, and Anne foolishly gave them to Buckingham as a token of her feelings toward him! Richelieu found out, and wanted 2 to be stolen, with the help of Milady and Rochefort, from Buckingham to further his plans to ruin the Queen! D’Artagnan, however, came to her rescue, and got them back in time! To be used ONLY with Richelieu, Milady, or Rochefort to cause opponent of your choice to Discard two (2) cards of their choice from their hand. You cannot see their hand, though. In Family Night Rules, you can place the cards in your own hand if you wish. However, if d’Artagnan is in current play, this Wild Card will have no effect!

~ War in England, Germany, Holland, or Spain!

War has been declared! The military has been called to the front, and all soldiers must immediately report for duty. Current Battle Round is VOID for ALL players!

READ WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT DONAREE:

"Nicely done. I really enjoyed the history in the introduction and the duel is well written. Best of luck with the novel!" ~ Author David Lee Summers, author of five books: Vampires of the Scarlet Order, The Solar Sea, and the "Old Star" science fiction series: The Pirates of Sufiro, Children of the Old Stars, and Heirs of the New Earth. www.davidleesummers.com

"Very exciting read! Felt like I was there witnessing the action!" ~ Candle Artist Jfay,

"I really enjoyed the humour and really laughed, not at Monsieur de la Donaree but with Monsieur de la Donaree! I dont know if you wrote it in this spirit but if you had a bit of Molière in you, I would not be surprised! He knew how to study people and would turn situations into a comic play! I laughed out loud, this is a gem! Not only de la Donaree is a fine sword, he has also a fine nose when it comes to pinpoint personalities, I'm talking about the Inkeeper and his situation with the wife here!! The second part is indeed in pure swashbuckling spirit, in rhythm and enthusiasm! And the end is a cliff-hanger! The beginning is "cocasse" (funny) as they might have said then in Gascony, and witty! Indeed Alexandre Dumas had a sense of humour too and satirically created at least one of his character ( in another book) to a character made up by Molière in one of his comic play. And Molière also took his inspiration from Dumas' s Musketeers and "The Man in the Iron Mask." I liked it! I had fun while reading this chapter about Monsieur de la Donaree, as while following the spirit of the Musketeers you gave a contemporary touch to the text!" ~ Artist Nicole Marques,

"Hurrah, Ted! I gleefully await the next installment! LOVE the romantic stuff! Bring it on! There are few things in this world I like better than a hot Viscount. Keep going, Ted! Bravo! Keep writing! I can't wait to read more! But it is par for the course as I am also a writer. Keep in touch!" ~ Author Genella de Grey, author of "Remember Me."

"Wow - What a wonderful beginning. As a whole, you have a unique way of writing & you captivated me by a few sentences peaking my interest to continue. For instance: ...hazed by the early morning mist...I love it! I look forward to reading the next chapter. You've gained my interest. That was impresive & informative. You've still got the hook in & I'm dangling to hear more. Thanks for the sneak peak." ~ Aspiring Author R.F.Taylor: Rianna

"Well done. Chapter One entices the reader craving more. I will look for The Adventures of Monsieur de La Donaree the Musketeer on the web. Keep up the excellent writing..." ~
