JOAN OF ARC  - Also see: The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

JOAN OF ARC
starring Ingrid Bergman and Jose Ferrer.
Academy Award-winner Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca) is spellbinding as the 15th century French peasant girl who rouses a nation and inspires the world with her faith and bravery. Fiercely believing that she is directed by God, Joan triumphantly leads an army into battle against the British, who are driven from France. When a new king (Jose Ferrer in a extraordinary film debut) is crowned, Joan's influence grows and makes him wary of her power, ultimately betraying her to martyrdom.

JOAN OF ARC (***)
starring Leelee Sobieski, Neil Patrick Harris, and Peter O'Toole.
The 140-minute feature follows Joan D'Arc's odyssey from peasant obscurity to notoriety as the "Maid of Orleans. As played by Leelee Sobieski, her process from naive farm girl to seasoned soldier is convincing, as is her gradual awakening to the underlying agendas of church and state. Framing Sobieski's focal performance are two equally fine turns from Neil Patrick Harris, who erases his legacy as TV's Doogie Howser, M.D. with a neatly shaded, steely Charles, and Peter O'Toole, who balances his signature reserve and present physical frailty to make Cauchon a moral compass for the story. Having opposed Joan as a threat to orthodoxy, the Bishop recognizes her purity too late.

A KID IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT
starring Thomas Ian Nicholas and Joss Ackland.
Faith in oneself is crucial but often difficult to develop. Calvin Fuller (Thomas Ian Nicholas), a misfit from the 20th-century "Knights" baseball team, lacks self-confidence. Imagine his alarm when he's sucked into the Middle Ages to answer the wizard Merlin's (Ron Moody) plea for a "Knight" to save King Arthur and Camelot from the scheming Lord Belasco (Art Malik).

KING ARTHUR
starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.
It's got a round table, some knights, and a noble warrior who rises to become King Arthur, but everything else about this revisionist legend is pure Hollywood. That's not such a bad thing if you enjoyed Rob Roy, Braveheart, Gladiator, and Troy, and there's some intriguing potential in presenting the "real" Arthur (played by Clive Owen) as a 5th-century soldier of Rome, assigned to defend Roman-imperial England against a hoard of invading Saxons (led by Stellan Skarsgård in hairy villain mode). As revamped history and "archaeological findings" would have us believe, Guinevere (Keira Knightley) is a warrior babe in face-paint and Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) is a nonentity who fades into the woodwork.

KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE (**)
starring Robert Taylor, Mel Ferrer and Ava Gardner.
MGM's first widescreen production finds Taylor playing Sir Lancelot to Mel Ferrer's King Arthur. Based in part on Thomas Malory's 14th-century version of the Camelot legend, Knights of the Round Table tells the familiar tale of Arthur's construction of a Utopian kingdom, where virtue, courage, and a sense of possibility rule the hearts of strong men. Lancelot is there every step of the way, but after Arthur marries a particularly bodacious Guinevere (Ava Gardner), Lancelot can't stifle his love for her, nor can she stifle her own for him.

A KNIGHT'S TALE (****)
starring Heath Ledger.
Heath Ledger (The Patriot) displaying great charm and a winning smile throughout, plays William Thatcher, squire to a washed up champion jouster, who dies during a competition, leaving William to masquerade as his master in order to collect their winnings. Aided by his initially less than enthusiatic pals Roland (Mark Addy from Full Monty) and Wat (Alan Tudyk, 28 Days) William fakes nobility to illegally enter competitions.

THE MARK OF ZORRO 1920 (****)
starring Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.
In 1919, Comedy actor Douglas Fairbanks was reading a copy of Argosy Magazine; inside he reads a new story written by author Johnston McCulley, called the "Curse of Capistrano." Based in early California, Doug sees a great opportunity for a new film. He then makes his first Swashbuckling movie ever, and renames the story "The mark of Zorro." It becomes an instant hit. Doug, after this, tries to make another comedy, but the fans would not have it. Doug then decides that the only films he will make from then on would be Swashbucklers - yes, he started it all!

THE MASK OF ZORRO (*****)
starring Antonio Bandaras, Anthony Hopkins.
The best of the Zorro films! Not naming it the MARK of Zorro, but the MASK of Zorro (borrowing the name from one of the many Johnston McCulley's Zorro novels). This film amazed me from beginning to end. Wonderful!

THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC (*****)
starring Milla Jovovich and Dustin Hoffman.
A young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy--but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister's giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

THE PATRIOT (*****)
starring Mel Gibson.
the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father.

PIRATES (***)

starring Walter Matthau

Although the title evokes a swashbuckling adventure, Roman Polanski's Pirates tuns out to be a seagoing tale with a bit of a difference. Captain Red (Walter Matthau) runs a hardy pirate ship with the able assistance of Frog, a dashing young French sailor (Cris Campion). One day Capt. Red is captured and taken aboard a Spanish galleon, but thanks to his inventiveness, he raises the crew to mutiny, takes over the ship, and kidnaps the daughter of the governor of Maracaibo (Charlotte Lewis, soon to co-star in The Golden Child opposite Eddie Murphy). The question is, can he keep this pace up? - PIRATES is the tale of the infamous British buccaneer Pirate Red. Red and his first mate are shipwrecked and set adrift on a makeshift raft. Faced with starvation, Fate puts them in the path of a grand Spanish Galleon whose cargo includes the legendary Capatiec Hanoccac, a price-less, ancient gold throne. Imprisoned in the hull, the resourceful Red plans an escape and mutiny, determined to make hotly pursues the Spanish Lord's beautiful niece.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - The Curse of the Black Pearl (****)
starring Johnny Depp
One of the latest Swashbucklers to be made - Johnny Depp as a pirate: can't go wrong there! Filled with action and comedy; this is for the pirate in us all - RRRRRR!!!!!!! (no, that's not my favorite letter!)

THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE (*****)
starring Bob Hope, Virginia Mayo.
Alright! This has to be the best comedy Swashbuckler ever! Well, perhaps! For it is a close rival to Danny Kaye's "The Court Jester." Anyways, Hope plays Sylvester Crosby (a name play on his good friend Bing Crosby), though, he says, he is a little thin for the part. He has a vaudville show (yes, back in the pirate days!) where he plays Sylvester the Great, man of seven faces. You just have to see this wacky comedy!

THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS (***)
starring Michael York
Sequel to The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, starring the same cast. This is a great flick, and the only movie, that I know of, that is based on Twenty Years After by Alexandre Dumas - making all the Musketeers 40 something years of age. This film was made Twenty Years After the Four Musketeers! Also, there are some surprises in the film, such as a chance encounter with the lengendary Cyrano de Bergerac!

READ WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT DONAREE:

"Nicely done. I really enjoyed the history in the introduction and the duel is well written. Best of luck with the novel!" ~ Author David Lee Summers, author of five books: Vampires of the Scarlet Order, The Solar Sea, and the "Old Star" science fiction series: The Pirates of Sufiro, Children of the Old Stars, and Heirs of the New Earth. www.davidleesummers.com

"Very exciting read! Felt like I was there witnessing the action!" ~ Candle Artist Jfay,
www.studio3bonline.com

"I really enjoyed the humour and really laughed, not at Monsieur de la Donaree but with Monsieur de la Donaree! I dont know if you wrote it in this spirit but if you had a bit of Molière in you, I would not be surprised! He knew how to study people and would turn situations into a comic play! I laughed out loud, this is a gem! Not only de la Donaree is a fine sword, he has also a fine nose when it comes to pinpoint personalities, I'm talking about the Inkeeper and his situation with the wife here!! The second part is indeed in pure swashbuckling spirit, in rhythm and enthusiasm! And the end is a cliff-hanger! The beginning is "cocasse" (funny) as they might have said then in Gascony, and witty! Indeed Alexandre Dumas had a sense of humour too and satirically created at least one of his character ( in another book) to a character made up by Molière in one of his comic play. And Molière also took his inspiration from Dumas' s Musketeers and "The Man in the Iron Mask." I liked it! I had fun while reading this chapter about Monsieur de la Donaree, as while following the spirit of the Musketeers you gave a contemporary touch to the text!" ~ Artist Nicole Marques,
www.myspace.com/nicolemarques

"Hurrah, Ted! I gleefully await the next installment! LOVE the romantic stuff! Bring it on! There are few things in this world I like better than a hot Viscount. Keep going, Ted! Bravo! Keep writing! I can't wait to read more! But it is par for the course as I am also a writer. Keep in touch!" ~ Author Genella de Grey, author of "Remember Me."
www.genelladegrey.com

"Wow - What a wonderful beginning. As a whole, you have a unique way of writing & you captivated me by a few sentences peaking my interest to continue. For instance: ...hazed by the early morning mist...I love it! I look forward to reading the next chapter. You've gained my interest. That was impresive & informative. You've still got the hook in & I'm dangling to hear more. Thanks for the sneak peak." ~ Aspiring Author R.F.Taylor: Rianna

"Well done. Chapter One entices the reader craving more. I will look for The Adventures of Monsieur de La Donaree the Musketeer on the web. Keep up the excellent writing..." ~
