Why Cover All of History?
When dealing with the subject of swashbuckling, the definitions of this subject may become a little confusing. But for a more complete explanation of what swashbuckling is in detail, please CLICK HERE. But on this page, we are dealing with the subject - mostly - of history.
Some may ask, "why cover all of history?" It is easy just to talk about Errol Flynn or Douglas Fairbanks Sr., or even what Tyrone Power has done in film. Or we could discuss the action novels of Alexandre Dumas, Sir Walter Scott, or even Robert Louis Stevenson - of which (both film and novels) I fully plan to do!! But, truly, why cover all of history? Why not just cut to the chase, and speak about direct "swashbuckling!!" Well, in my opinion, you cannot have swashbuckling without having history - they just go hand in hand!!
When I first became interested in swashbuckling (which was just under thirty years ago), I had no idea of how closely associated with history it truly was. Why, just about every swashbuckling story has true history for its backbone - even the one's that are pure fantasy!! So to speak of swashbucking without putting it into a "time-setting" would be an impossibility!! And you will even notice a "Time-Setting" Menu on the main page of this website that will lead you to the world of swashbuckling through the eyes of history, through which we will learn together how closely associated swashbuckling is to history.
Why, just consider these swashbuckling subjects and their historical time-settings:
Robin Hood: Middle Ages; Medieaval England; Medieaval Europe.
Sir Henry Morgan: English Privateer in late 1600's England, who sailed the West Indies for King Charles II.
Musketeers: Seventeenth Century France; European history from about 1625 A.D. until the percussion rifle system was invented in the mid-eighteen hundreds A.D.
King Arthur: Beginning of the Dark Ages England.
King Richard: 1190's A.D. English King, not too long after the Norman conquest of 1066 A.D. which set Normans in Saxony England.
Sir Ivanhoe: 1190's.
